The Organization

The community members of Shackan or the Scw'exmx - People of the Creeks - is taken from the name of the Nicola River, Scw'ex, meaning creek. The Shackan Indian Band is one of five bands in the Nicola Valley who comprise the Scw'exmx. Their mission statement is to promote the development of a healthy lifestyle and self- sufficiency for Shackan community members while achieving positive, respectful, leadership to all members when administering services. Shackan’s services comprise of Administration, Education, Finance, Social Development, Emergency Services and Capital Infrastructure.

Position: Senior Financial Advisor

Type: Full-time/Part-time

Job Summary: A Day in the life of our Senior Financial Advisor

Reporting to and under the support and supervision provided by the Band Administrator, the Senior Financial Officer is responsible for day-to-day management of the systems of the financial administration of Shackan including financial management, control, and reporting while maintaining all of Shackan's financial investments and assets. . They will ensure all decisions and actions meet the relevant legislation, policies, and procedures that govern Shackan including the Shackan Financial Administration Law and any other Laws enacted by the Shackan Council.

This individual will oversee the finance department including payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and other staff as directed by the Band Administrator to ensure efficient day-to-day operations. The right person will be a progressive accounting professional who is a key contributor to the change and growth of Shackan Indian Band. As the Senior Financial Officer, you will:

• Ensure the financial administration systems, policies, procedures, directions, and internal controls are appropriately designed and operating effectively,

• Administer and maintain the chart of accounts of Shackan and all its entities.

• Prepare the draft annual budgets and amendments for Shackan and its entities

• Prepare all monthly financial statements and information for the review and discussion with Council and Committees,

• Prepare the financial components of reports to Council and Committees including short, medium, and long-term plans, projections, and priorities,

• Actively monitor compliance with any agreements and funding arrangements entered by Shackan,

• Administer and supervise the maintenance of the financial systems and records of Shackan to facilitate the annual audit,

• Monitor compliance with the Financial Administrative Law

• Prepare or provide any documentation and financial information required by Council or Committee to discharge its responsibilities

• Evaluate the financial administration system of Shackan and recommend improvements,

• Develop and recommend procedures for the safeguarding of assets and to ensure approved procedures are followed,

• Develop and recommend procedures to Council for identifying and mitigating financial reporting and fraud risks and ensure approved procedures are followed,

ABOUT YOU - Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance, or related field.

• 5+ years’ of progressively responsible accounting and management experience preferably in the First Nations communities or with Indigenous organizations

• CPA Designation in good standing

• Class 5 Drivers License
